Job Description About us:
Save the Children's impact is growing. The next few years are a critical time in the organisations trajectory. The Hunger Reduction and Livelihoods Team (covering nutrition, food security, livelihoods and social protection) is integral to realising this ambition.
To achieve this ambition, Save the Children needs to innovate and develop traditional and non-traditional partnerships to improve the quality and scale of programmes in fragile states and all other contexts to ensure maximum impact on reducing child poverty and malnutrition. Save the Children is already a global leader on nutrition and there is need to secure impact for children and evidence from the growing global investments. Child poverty, particularly in an extreme form, can be reduced and eliminated as social protection is progressively realised assisting ever more children. Save the Children is determined to ensure that no child is left behind and the poorest children and families above all, should benefit from economic opportunities that raise investment in childhood and subsequently outcomes for all children.
We are looking for an international development professional with strong leadership and a clear track record of achievement. The successful candidate will have excellent team management skills, strategic thinking capability and highly developed influencing and communication skills to ensure we design and support the delivery of high quality programmes. They should have experience in nutrition, and/or food security and/or poverty reduction programming and approaches.
The role will motivate and lead a team that provides strategic thematic and technical support to country offices and Members ensuring that we develop and deliver world-class programmes at scale with clear evidence and impact. The role builds Save the Children's influence and brand profile supporting country offices to share learning, building the evidence base for national and international influencing on what works, and to hold governments and other actors accountable for their obligations. About the Role:
The Hunger Reduction and Livelihoods Team sits in the Programme, Policy and Quality department of Save the Children. Your main responsibilities will include: Strategic planning:
- Guide the development of an operational plan for SCUK's 2016-18 Child Poverty strategy.
- Ensure, in collaboration with senior nutrition adviser, that nutrition component of the SCUKs 2016-18 Health and Nutrition strategy is coherent and facilitate team engagement in operational planning.
- Represent SCUK on the Save the Children steering committee for the Global Initiative for Child Poverty and feed into strategy and planning as needed. Team management:
- Support team to implement 2015 team plan and monitor progress.
- Support learning and development of the team, ensuring that all staff are making progress on their L & D objectives.
- Provide direct line management support to six staff through a minimum of monthly one to one meetings.
- Facilitate the development of the 2016 team plan in last quarter. External representation and networking:
- Support the expansion and strengthening of expand networks in which the hunger reduction and livelihoods team engages across social protection, nutrition, food security and livelihoods.
- Identify and directly engage where appropriate in opportunities to build understanding and generate greater awareness of, and interest in, our work
- Identify key opportunities to learn from best practice and engage in debates aimed at improving programming and policy across relevant thematic areas. Budget management:
- Monitor budget spending, support quarterly reforecasting in collaboration with team coordinator, and ensure budget is at least 95% spent by end of year.
- Manage team cost recovery in collaboration with all team line managers to ensure team cost recovery target is met. About You:
You will have:
• Excellent Leadership skills with a proven ability to work with colleagues to set a strategic vision, inspire others to support and deliver the vision and secure cross-team/theme engagement for delivery;
• Proven ability to lead a team to deliver results. This should include delivering on strategy and programme results and expanding and diversify a portfolio;
• Outstanding influencing skills, with a proven ability to influence peers and senior colleagues through the building of cross-organisational relationships and mobilisation of support for key issues. Demonstration of an ability to influence beyond authority will be an asset;
• Outstanding networking skills with a proven ability to work globally and effectively with a range of colleagues and counterparts - experience with large bilateral donors such as DFID, multilaterals such as the World Bank and the EC, and private foundations such as CIFF is desirable;
• Strong interpersonal skills, with an excellent ability to communicate effectively and with impact and adapt style for a wide range of audiences with diverse backgrounds and at all levels (young people, peers, senior colleagues and the media);
• Excellent writing and analytical skills - a publication record is desirable but not required;
• Proven ability to develop, manage and monitor budgets.
Thematic skills
• Extensive experience and/or in-depth understanding of the following sectors - livelihoods, nutrition, food security, and social protection.
• Track record of building, maintaining and developing relationships and networks with a range of partners across the nutrition, food security, livelihoods and social protection sectors to maximise organisational reach and influence.
• Masters in a field related to the topics covered by the role;
• Ability to travel overseas for up to two weeks per visit as required;
• Commitment to Save the Children UK's core values of accountability, ambition, collaboration, creativity and integrity.
What we offer:
