Job Description- TEACHER


Many of the young people based in care homes are initially taught in solo provision; over time some progress to being taught in a school, though sometimes with additional support provided.

Full time education is central to the programme for all learners: it focuses both upon academic progress, making up any lost ground and on building self-awareness, self-esteem, resilience, confidence and independence.

Each learner will be engaged in a personalised learning programme that is appropriate to their age and ability. Baseline assessment is used to formulate learning goals and a differentiated curriculum targeted to the needs of the individual. Literacy and numeracy are at the core of the curriculum and for older learners there are opportunities to follow a range of vocational experiences and to receive careers guidance.

The programmes are delivered by teachers themselves and by a larger team of tutors, who visit solo homes and take classes within the school.

Learners' progress and achievement are tracked resulting in either learning interventions to improve progress and/or setting new goals to further raise achievement.

Areas of responsibility:-

The Teacher's role has key middle leadership responsibilities

To put into place planning and assessment in identified key subject areas or whole school themes (e.g. SEN); and to monitor and evaluate the learning that takes place in them; both for the young people in identified homes, and those taught in the school.
To prepare, coordinate and implement, personalised learning programmes for young people residing within homes for which they are responsible, taking account of any statement of special needs or Personal Education Plan. The teacher will be responsible for young people in a number of identified homes.
To maintain a high standard of education in accordance with statutory regulations. The teacher will have lead responsibilities in agreed subjects and will support other colleagues (tutors) who also teach those subjects
To create and maintain a positive environment for learning and behaviour in the homes that they have a lead role in, and in the school. This will include liaison with home managers and other care colleagues.
To line and performance manage a small group of tutors

Key Tasks:-

Plan personalised learning programmes in line with the curriculum policy, using the Differentiated Curriculum Plan.
Put into place IEPs, and IBPs taking account of statements of SEN, PEPs and risk assessments. Attend planning and review meetings associated with the above.
Plan and prepare schemes of work with resources. Guide colleagues in how to use them.
Plan and prepare individual lessons within the schemes of work and endeavour to integrate sufficient differentiation within tasks and subject matter that all children will be engaged.
Coordinate assessments of students in the homes and of the subjects that you are responsible for, keep a record of assessments, set targets for pupil achievement and track progress towards these targets.
With support of Clinical Services, carry out or coordinate baseline assessments for identified students
Where appropriate prepare children for tests, examinations and other awards and qualifications as may be desirable in individual cases. Work with colleagues and other professionals, as necessary, in securing such qualifications and awards.
To prepare regular reports on all students taught, both for internal or external use.
Participate in curricular and extra-curricular activities as required within reasonable limits.
To work with other staff to create a calm and welcoming atmosphere in the School and Homes.
To take a proactive role in behaviour management and improvement.
To consider the health and safety of students and staff at all times. To carry out risk assessment as appropriate for activities. To be mindful of student's welfare at all times. To record and report all matters considered dangerous, inappropriate or likely to cause children physical or mental harm.
To participate in staff meetings and to work with colleagues in order to promote the best interests of the students.
To co-operate in performance management; both your own and that of tutors that you are responsible for.
To play your part in monitoring and evaluation, of your subject, of the progress of young people you are responsible for, and of the work of tutors that you line manage.
To prepare for Ofsted inspections and take a lead role in managing inspections where your subject or your home is involved.
To review with your line manager your methods of working and to undertake professional development as deemed appropriate.
To attend mandatory training.
To undertake professional development as deemed appropriate.
To carry out other such teaching or non-teaching duties as shall be considered reasonable in the circumstances including break and lunch duty, taking assemblies, covering for absent colleagues and attending concerts.
