Job descriptionAs future technologies evolve towards the More Electric Aircraft, Safran has a significant need for electric motors across its broad product portfolio. An Advanced Product Development group is being established to develop high performance electric motors as a core capability for Safran.
The Senior Specialist Engineer - Mechanical Design will lead all mechanical design aspects of this activity and will report to the Engineering Manager - Electric Motors. As a key member of this highly innovative and technically excellent team, they will play a major part in establishing superior, differentiated technologies for future MEA systems.
Expert in the design of high speed rotating machines, they will be responsible for the creation of high integrity designs that meet performance, reliability, cost and safety requirements. Excellent engineering knowledge and judgement in all aspects of mechanical design will be required. The role holder will use depth and breadth of knowledge to develop and refine solutions to complex problems and to demonstrate design robustness.
Primary Responsibilities :
• Responsible for the interpretation of customer and internal technical requirements against which to accurately and correctly design.
• Producing innovative designs to meet all aspects of requirements and to establish world class product performance.
• Responsible for achieving performance, reliability, cost and safety objectives.
• Design verification through a comprehensive combination of analysis and test, covering all aspects of functional, performance and environmental requirements.
• Technical decision making and taking overall technical responsibility for product performance and the successful demonstration of compliance to specifications.
• Helping to create a future Product Plan and Technology Roadmap and working closely with external partners including Universities to develop new technologies.
• Technical supervision and training of less experienced personnel will be required.
• Capable of leading the technical interface with the customer, often involving the development or advancement of technologies and being recognised by the customer as an expert in the field.
• Providing technical direction in the event of Product Integrity issues and their potential effect on Airworthiness and providing detailed diagnosis and solutions.

Candidate skills & requirementsExperience and Qualifications :
• An engineering degree in a related discipline or equivalent experience and education.
• In-depth experience of high speed rotating machines in the field of aerospace or power related products.
• Demonstrated experience in innovation.
Personal Characteristics :
• Technical excellence to ensure top quality engineering both personally and within the team.
• Extensive knowledge of engineering principles and practices with a high level of technical judgement, often operating at the frontiers of materials technology.
• Detailed knowledge of bearing systems, shaft and rotor design, cooling and lubrication, electrical machine concepts, winding and insulation systems, cast and machined parts and sealing systems.
• A flair for innovation and achieving novel solutions to problems.
• Proficient in CAD modelling - concept, detail, components and assemblies.
• Familiar with the principles of design-to-cost and design-for-manufacture. Knowledge of machining, fabrication and assembly methods and the materials and processes used.
• Able to build strong technical relationships with external customers and other agencies.
• A flexible approach and a willingness to engage in areas outside their normal remit.
• An enthusiastic and positive outlook.
