Job descriptionTo lead the engineering activities on projects ensuring that the product meets all customer and regulatory requirements including performance, reliability, cost and weight. To plan and deliver all engineering tasks according to the project schedule and to monitor and control non recurring engineering costs.
Understand and interpret customer and internal specifications to extract technical requirements.
Carry out trade studies to identify the best concept to meet these requirements.
Verify the design by applying the most suitable combination of analysis and testing
Oversee the detail design of the product
Coordinate engineering project tasks and be responsible for technical decision making in
Take overall technical responsibility for product performance and the successful demonstration of compliance to performance specifications.
Formal and informal training of less experienced personnel will be required.
Provision of independent specialist technical consultancy to other programmes and to act as a Peer Reviewer for programs not directly involved in.
Be capable of leading the technical customer interface for complex programmes, often involving the development or advancement of technologies and will be recognised by customers as an expert in aerospace power generation technology and have the ability to build strong technical relationships with external customers and other agencies.
Able to provide technical direction in the event of Product Integrity issues and their potential effect on Airworthiness and provide detailed diagnosis and solutions to performance issues discovered during aircraft service.
Customer liason on all technical aspects of the project during definition, development and qualification phases • Ability to lead (Work Package Owner) a small team of Engineers, coordinating activities and liaising with Project Managers, Engineers and the customer. • Performing Electrical, Mechanical development and qualification tests on LPS products using high speed drives in conjunction with electrical, electronic and mechanical equipment and analogue and digital instrumentation.
Additional descriptionBe able to conduct and to teach and instruct others to perform the following tasks: • Design of specific tests for specific customer criteria. • Design and setting up of mechanical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems. • Setting up of electrical wiring to specific impedance's. • Ability to fault find test equipment and test rigs. • Ability to use and program Data Acquisition systems (Dewetron system in conjunction with Dasy Lab software) • Writing and approval of Technical documentation, including test procedures, Engineering Reports, Compliance Analysis, Equipment Specifications and Production Acceptance Test Specifications. • Involvement in the design process, working with engineers from other disciplines including Design, Stress, Configuration, Materials etc. • Ability to plan workload (using MS Project)
• Perform data analysis of test results, assess trends to identify and help resolve generator performance issues. Ability to perform 6 sigma assessments for various test processes (advantageous). • Provide Technical Development and Certification advice • Ability to guide and train other engineers as required. • Design test equipment and fixtures, create marked up drawings of critical dimensions/ functionality for acceptance checks after manufacture. • Raise capital sanctions for high cost items including procurement specifications, financial and technical justification and acceptance test requirements.

Candidate skills & requirementsA Mechanical Engineering Degree or equivalent experience and education is required.
Must be self-sufficient and self-motivated.
Able to identify technical risks and design activities in order to mitigate them.
Extensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices will be required with a high level of technical judgement, often operating at the frontiers of materials technology.
Experience of aerospace or power generation related products would be desirable with a proven record of accomplishment operating at this level of seniority.
Knowledge of bearing systems, shaft and rotor structure design , oil cooling and lubrication systems design, electric machines concepts, winding and insulation systems design, cast housings & parts, machined parts, static and dynamic sealing.
Familiarity with machining, fabrication, assembly methods and other production techniques and the materials and processes used.
Must be familiar with the principles of design to cost, design for manufacture and design for assembly.
Experience in product development of rotating machinery will be required.
