Job descriptionAs future technologies evolve towards the More Electric Aircraft, Safran has a significant need for electric motors across its broad product portfolio. A key member of the Advanced Product Development team, this role is to provide specialist expertise in the design and performance evaluation of high performance electric motors as integral elements of various different products and systems for civil and military aircraft. The ability to perform architecture studies including different motor/control technologies is also desirable. The role will report to the Engineering Manager -Electric Motors.
• Undertake electromagnetic design and performance evaluation of new products from initial concept through completion of qualification testing and into service. Accept overall technical responsibility for machine functional performance and manufacturability.
• Drive the development of new technology initiatives, in particular new concepts of advance motor drive systems aimed at new "more electric" system applications.
• Coordinate investigation and undertake analysis where necessary to resolve system performance issues.
• Establish and maintain specialist design tools and methodologies to support electrical machine design.
• Establish innovative approaches to system and machine design to facilitate delivery of world class, differentiated products and systems.
• Provide specialist technical consultancy to other Safran businesses and programmes.
• Support Business Development in winning new business, representing the Company at supplier, partner and customer locations, both in the UK and overseas.
• Able to demonstrate extensive experience in electrical machine design in a manufacturing environment.
• Understanding of the interaction between electrical machines and power electronics with specific regard to electrical machine design considerations.
• Knowledge of alternative electrical machine technologies.
• Experience of quick-sizing and of finite element analysis with emphasis on electromagnetic and thermal performance of electrical machines. Proficiency in the use of a range of electromagnetic design and analysis tools.
• Knowledge of motors, motor control technologies and motor drive systems in civil and military aerospace applications.
• Demonstrated ability to produce novel solutions and cost effective designs.
• Understanding of the system level implications of motor/control design decisions.

Engineering degree or equivalent.
Relevant postgraduate training would be an advantage.
• Analytical skills suited to the solution of complex technical problems.
• Demonstrated ability to work individually and also within a team structure, to complete tasks on time and within budget.
• Flexible and adaptable.
• Excellent leadership and communication skills, oral and written.
• Confident in customer facing situations.
• Able to share skills and to develop others
