Technical Consultant - Birmingham, City, B4 6AR

In this role, you will provide technical support and guidance to field and head office staff on the technical and legislative aspects of life, pension, investment and income protection business. You will also support the maintenance of the Group's compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements.


Provide first-line technical support and guidance to field and head office staff in relation to complex queries covering areas such as:
- Retirement planning and income drawdown
- The application of trusts in financial planning
- Business protection solutions
- Personal taxation

Monitor and identify technical changes and developments arising from relevant sources, including HMRC, The Pensions Regulator, ABI and DWP.
Analyse and interpret the impact of legislative and regulatory changes on the Society's business.
Provide advice on the technical implications of proposed process changes and improvements.
Support Operations in the management of complex cases, such as pensions splitting on divorce.
Draft and circulate business-facing technical communications such as technical factsheets.
Review and sign-off customer-facing documentation, including key features documents, statement mailings, policy documents and media articles.
Support the on-going maintenance and development of the Group's financial planning/needs analysis software, in particular the specialist calculators.
Act as Pension Transfer Specialist (controlled function CF30, as defined by the FCA) ensuring pension transfers and switches are dealt with in accordance with Group and FCA guidelines.
Provide first-line advice checking to ensure compliance with applicable requirements, in relation to inheritance tax planning and SIPPs.
Support the Technical Manager (Pensions and Retirement Planning) in assessing the recipient of death benefits under the Society's pension schemes.
Support the Technical Manager (Pensions and Retirement Planning) and the Technical Manager (Investments, Protection and Tax) in the proactive monitoring of the Society's compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements.
Support the Technical Services Manager in the maintenance and development of team processes and procedures.

Skills and Experience

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with an ability to explain technical matters clearly and in plain English.
Excellent presentation skills.
Ability to analyse and interpret technical information and to understand the commercial and practical implications of decisions made.
Strong organisational and planning ability.
Experience of working in a financial services administration and/or sales/advice environment.

Knowledge and Qualifications

Degree or equivalent level education.

CII Diploma in Financial Planning essential.

Qualification to be Pension Transfer Specialist (for example, G60, AF3) desirable.

Advanced Diploma in Financial Planning ('AF' pre-fixed exams), or progress towards and/or other specialist qualifications relevant to role desirable.

Good working knowledge of excel, word and databases.
