Research Engineer – 5G Radio Network Engineering and Management


Main Responsibility Area:

You will be working as a specialist with a focus on research and development of novel 5G RAN Network Management (NM) / SON / Quality-of-Experience (QoE) concepts. Your responsibilities include the development and integration of corresponding experimental systems and demonstrators.

Job Description:

You will be a member of the Network Operations and Architectures research team with a focus on Cognitive Networks, Customer Experience Management and Network System Architectures in 4G and 5G. In your role you will innovate, develop and evaluate novel ways to automate Network Management together with your research colleagues. Your role includes the following responsibilities:

  • Analysis of 5G NM and CEM use cases & requirements, contribution to the review of the technology state-of-the-art
  • Design, develop, integrate and evaluate new NM and CEM concepts as part of the 5G air interface and RAN, using simulation, proof-of-concept implementation and evaluation of real network data
  • Protect the work by invention reports
  • Contribute to research projects with external partners (universities, research institutes, national and international funded research projects)
  • Contribute to promote Nokia’s thought leadership by publications in relevant conferences and journals and presentations in workshops
  • Support for related standardization activities
  • Contribute to internal communication and technology transfer to business units (Mobile Broadband OSS and Global Services)


  • M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science,  or related field (PhD is a plus)
  • Good knowledge of Mobile Radio Access (LTE(-A) / small cells / Cloud RAN, WiFi) technologies including their standardization (3GPP)
  • Knowledge and interest in Analytics and Artificial Intelligence methods: statistical, probabilistic (e.g., Bayesian Networks), machine learning techniques; rule- / policy-based systems
  • Basic understanding of Network Management architectures, protocols (e.g., SNMP), information models and functions (PM, CM, FM)
  • Interest to analyze and improve real-world network operation and customer experience management use cases
  • Background in Distributed Systems / IT, Software and Virtualization Technologies
  • Very good practical SW and experimental skills (setup / installation of Linux/GNU-based systems, C/C++/Java/Script /matlab & R programming, development of experimental systems / demos)
  • Fluent English, both written and spoken
