We are currently recruiting for a Packaging Development Manager to join our R&D; Function within the Refreshments & Beverages category. Refreshment Category covers Ice Cream and Beverages, and Unilever is globally leader in both markets. We have well known billion euro global brands like Lipton, Magnum, and Wall's, as well as iconic brands like Ben & Jerry's, Cornetto, Ades soy drinks, and the tea family brands like PG Tips.

The Category recognises Packaging as an important part of the product mix. Not only does it fulfil a very important functional role, to contain, protect and inform, but also as the first "touchpoint" with the consumer, it must engage the consumer, reflecting the brand proposition, and delivering a delightful experience.

To ensure the robustness and technical performance of new packaging before it is placed on the market place involves both design and technical innovation in packaging.

• The job holder will work in our Tea Packaging group, working closely with other Unilever functions as part of a cross-functional team. The job holder will be the packaging workstream leader on innovation projects, developing consumer and customer preferred packaging designs. The job holder will be expected to maximise the use of design tools and deliver projects using Unilever project tools (Innovation Management, Packaging Processes, Packaging Excellence).
• The job holder can occasionally also be the Technical Project Leader, responsible for the delivery of all the R&D; programme on a project.

The job holder will have packaging technologist reports, and will be required to manage their work programme, annual targets, and development plan


As a Packaging Development Manager you will be responsible for:
• To deliver, as the packaging workstream leader member of a cross functional project team, innovative solutions to agreed projects, on time in full, using the latest best practice tools, processes and ways of working.
• To deliver the content of technical specifications for all packaging components developed in a project.
• To develop and maintain the relevant technical expertise and competencies for self.
• To participate and where relevant, lead, building of the packaging capability through involvement in relevant cross group activities.
• To manage, coach and develop WL1's where required.
• To develop comprehensive development testing protocols for all critical aspects of pack performance and ensure pack is tested against these
• To be a Core member of the global category packaging network. Responsible for reviewing global programme, defining category needs (eg. capabilities), owns/maintaining category best practice, ensuring the relevant Quality in Innovation tools are applied.
• To develop and test packaging in accordance with the One Unilever Packaging Process (1UPP)
• To comply with the Unilever Code of Business Principles and all SHE and QA policies, including the support of product claims, risk management and environmental awareness


• Proven extensive experiecne in an FMCG company
• Project Management experience
• Vast experience of working on Tea packaging projects
• Able to work effectively in multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural teams.
• Flexibility in work style to be able to manage several projects simultaneously.
• Intermediate to Advanced Intermediate Level English (person must be able to write emails and reports in English which can be easily understood, and can actively participate at English-speaking business meetings).

• Basic Awareness to working knowledge expertise on a range of packaging materials
• Working knowledge of the key materials for Tea and Beverages
• Working knowledge of the key filling and packing lines for tea, especially high speed tea bag filling and packing line
• Working Knowledge: Project Management Skills
• Educated in packaging technology or a related technical discipline.
